Southwest England: Stonehenge, Salisbury, Westbury, Bradford-on-Avon, Bath
Today we left London to begin our travels around the UK. We’ve hired a small car for the next 3 weeks. We started off by driving southwest to Stonehenge. Of course they were good to see but the most memorable aspect was how damn cold it was!!!! I’m not sure that either of us have been so cold before. While there we bought a heritage pass which gives us entrance to heritage sites throughout Britain. We continued on to Salisbury where we stopped to check out Salisbury Cathedral and the Magna Carta which was on display there. We then continued on to see The Westbury White Horse which is a chalk drawing carved in the hillside between Westbury and Bratton. We continued on to arrive at a little town called Bradford-on- Avon. We stopped here for a late lunch at a place called The Bridge Tearoom which was voted one of England’s best (it’s in Marks “Great Britain’s Top 100 Tearoom” book). Bradford-on-Avon is a quaint village on a hill through which the River Avon runs. Today they were filming a period costume drama about Charles Darwin outside our tearooms. We drove on to arrive in Bath just as it was beginning to get dark. We’re staying in a YHA hostel in an old converted mansion. We’re at the top of the mansion’s highest tower. I’m just about to have a job interview via phone. Mark’s been watching The Weakest Link
